چکیده

In this paper, we show a way to exploit sparsity in the problem data in a primal-dual potential reduction method for solving a class of semidefinite programs. When the problem data is sparse, the dual variable is also sparse, but the primal one is not. To avoid working with the dense primal variable, we apply Fukuda et al.’s theory of partial matrix completion and work with partial matrices instead. The other place in the algorithm where sparsity should be exploited is in the computation of the search direction, where the gradient and the Hessian-matrix product of the primal and dual barrier functions must be computed in every iteration. By using an idea from automatic differentiation in backward mode, both the gradient and the Hessian-matrix product can be computed in time proportional to the time needed to compute the barrier functions of sparse variables itself. Moreover, the high space complexity that is normally associated with the use of automatic differentiation in backward mode can be avoided in this case. In addition, we suggest a technique to efficiently compute the determinant of the positive definite matrix completion that is required to compute primal search directions. Exploiting Sparsity in Semidefinite Programming via Matrix Completion I: General Framework

A critical disadvantage of primal-dual interior-point methods compared to dual interior-point methods for large scale semidefinite programs (SDPs) has been that the primal positive semidefinite matrix variable becomes fully dense in general even when all data matrices are sparse. Based on some fundamental results about positive semidefinite matrix completion, this article proposes a general met...

A path following interior-point algorithm for semidefinite optimization problem based on new kernel function

In this paper, we deal to obtain some new complexity results for solving semidefinite optimization (SDO) problem by interior-point methods (IPMs). We define a new proximity function for the SDO by a new kernel function. Furthermore we formulate an algorithm for a primal dual interior-point method (IPM) for the SDO by using the proximity function and give its complexity analysis, and then we sho...

Exploiting sparsity in primal-dual interior-point methods for semidefinite programming

The Helmberg-Rendl-Vanderbei-Wolkowicz/Kojima-Shindoh-Hara/Monteiro and the Nesterov-Todd search directions have been used in many primal-dual interior-point methods for semidefinite programs. This paper proposes an efficient method for computing the two directions when a semidefinite program to be solved is large scale and sparse.

ABS Solution of equations of second kind and application to the primal-dual interior point method for linear programming

Abstract  We consider an application of the ABS procedure to the linear systems arising from the primal-dual interior point methods where Newton method is used to compute path to the solution. When approaching the solution the linear system, which has the form of normal equations of the second kind, becomes more and more ill conditioned. We show how the use of the Huang algorithm in the ABS cl...

On the implementation of primal-dual interior-point methods for semide ̄nite programming problems derived from the KYP lemma

We discuss fast implementations of primal-dual interior-point methods for semidefinite programs derived from the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma, a class of problems that are widely encountered in control and signal processing applications. By exploiting problem structure we achieve a reduction of the complexity by several orders of magnitude compared to generalpurpose semidefinite programming so...
